Canyoneering is the sport of exploring a canyon by both hiking and engaging in rope techniques like rappelling and Tyrolean traverses. In these experiences you’ll be exploring a canyon nestled in the mountains of the Sonoran Desert. Our action-packed trips through these desert oasis are some of our most popular trips.

Half-day canyon trip are suitable for most ability levels. Full day canyoneering trips are a backcountry experience and require a solid base level of fitness and some moderate hiking experience.

What Makes Tucson Canyoneering Special

Tucson is one of the only places in the world to rappel down technical canyons flanked by towering saguaro cactuses. Canyon trips are adventurous— you’ll navigate year-round pools of water and scramble through boulder fields. Altitude Mountain Guides offers two canyoneering trips.

Half-Day: Tanque Verde Canyon

  • 4-5 hours long

  • 3 miles of hiking & 300ft elevation gain

  • 3 rappels up to 90ft

  • One Tyrolean traverse

  • Scrambling through boulder fields

  • More beginner-friendly

Full Day: Seven Cataracts Canyon

  • 5-8 hours long

  • 6 miles of hiking & 1000ft elevation gain

  • 6-7 Rappels up to 120ft

  • Scrambling through boulder fields

  • More of an adventurous backcountry experience

After You Book

After you book, your guide will contact you two days prior to the trip to introduce themselves and touch base.

The meet-up spot on the day of your trip is Le Buzz Cafe. Grab a coffee and a snack if you’re hungry!

Gear fitting takes about 15 minutes and from there it is a short drive up the winding mountain road to the canyonhead.
